Geek Brief and Augmented Reality

I’m on GeekBrief.tv. Sorta! :) Thanks Cali , Neal, and Eric!

I was first interested in augmented reality when Cali Qik-ed about it. It’s like overlaying virtual reality over real life. Totally mind boggling. And then I came across this video from Eric Rice. You just have to watch it. It’s hard to explain how a 3D a cat is popping out of a 2D piece of paper, but Eric does a good job at explaining it.

I’m so ready for this Augmented Future we’re heading towards. Maybe one day, our world would turn into something like the world in Minority Report, but let’s hope it’s much safer!

Augmented reality is pretty interesting stuff. When I was a student at MSU the METLAB there in the dept. of comp sci and engineering had an augmented reality program, focusing on wearable systems. I never got to try it myself, but even then they had a working wearable prototype that projected images onto some sort of HUD that you wore. It had all kinds of camera tracking and stuff; pretty bulky, but it hints at the sort of thing that will be commonplace in the future.

Additionally, if you’re interested in this topic you should read the novel Rainbows End by Vernor Vinge. Good book regardless, but it deals extensively with augmented reality.
