Google I/O 2010 Overview
May 27, 2010 by daynah
Filed under Conferences, Google, Links and Resources

Another Google I/O has come and gone, and I had a fabulous and geeky time there. The great thing about Google I/O is that it’s geared toward developers, so the sessions are usually code-based or overviews of new APIs and developments over in Google HQ.
Of all the things I learned about this year at the conference, the most exciting was learning what direction HTML 5 is heading in. Last year, I learned about the new <video> and <canvas> tags, but there’s so much more now.
This year’s conference was much bigger than the previous years. The conference sold out quickly with 5000 attendees. There were sessions going on in every room on the second floor of Moscone West Hall. I was most impressed with the bigger Developer’s Sandbox. It was 4 or 5 times bigger than last year’s. It was great talking to companies and developers who are already implementing Google products into their products.
Although I was drained from attending all the sessions, I didn’t want to miss the Google After Party. It’s actually a very geeky event with food and robots! The MakerFaire was in town and they had some amazing displays, robots, and man-powered machines all over the party.. definitely something you don’t want to miss while at the conference.
There was a lot of fun and excitement at this year’s Google I/O. There were many amazing announcements as well, including the Web-M project (standard video codec), new features in Android Froyo including support of Flash, Google TV, and our fabulous gifts for attending — the Sprint HTC Evo 4g — a gorgeous smartphone running Android!
Below is a summary of all the sessions I attended. For more information on each session, please follow the links to the Google Waves. The official YouTube videos will be coming soon. For more information about the conference, see the official Google I/O 2010 website.
- Bringing Google to your Site
- Beyond Design: Creating positive User Experiences
- Developing with HTML 5
- Ignite Google I/O
- Google Analytics APIs: End to end
- Surf the Steam: Google Buzz, Location, and Social Gaming
- SEO Site Advice from the Experts
- Optimize every bit of your site serving and web pages with Page Speed
- HTML 5 Status Update
Summary of each Session
Bringing Google to your Site – In this session, we got many different examples on how we can add Google to our websites. Some examples were using custom searches (now with auto-completion), Google Feed API, Adsense with AJAX (new), SideWiki, Buzz API and Google Font API.
Beyond Design: Creating positive User Experiences – In this session, I learned that there are 7 principles for creating positive user experiences: 1) Be fast 2) Be yourself 3) Engage in conversations 4) Be willing to give up control 5) Be polite 6) Be prepared for failure 7) Be reliable. Examples of these principles were also talked about.
Developing with HTML 5 – This session was great since the presentation itself was written in all HTML 5 tags and coding. If you flip through the presentation, you can try out the bleeding edge features available for browsers in the near future. Some new HTML 5-specific tags and features are offline data storage, JS APIs, <head>, <hgroup>, <nav>, <section>, <article>, <aside>, <footer>, new form field types, <audio>, <video>, <canvas>, new CSS selectors and font support, transitions, and so much more. Run the presentation in a Chrome browser to see what lies ahead.
Ignite Google I/O – This session was a lot of fun. Ignite sessions capture geek cultures in a series of 5-minute speedy presentations. Each speaker gets 20 slides that auto-advances after 15 seconds. Topics were of various topics, from surviving the North Atlantic ocean and breaking world records, to our habits of searching on the internet, to playing battleships in a pond. It was very entertaining and super geeky.. and is best if you see the videos once they’re up.
Google Analytics APIs: End to end – This session was given by a UCR Alumni, Nick Mihailovski! This session demonstrated advance techniques of tracking statistics on your website using the Google Analytics API. For more information, see “What is Google Analytics”
Surf the Steam: Google Buzz, Location, and Social Gaming was not my favorite session since they spent a few minutes talking about the new Buzz Api, and then started stepping through code on how to implement the BuzzBingo game. The one thing I learned from this session was that there’s a new Buzz API — great if you want to create a social game!
SEO Site Advice from the Experts was an excellent session. It was a panel of SEO experts who went through a list of submitted sites and let us know what the site is doing right and wrong about SEO. They talked about how important it was to use text on your webpages, how meta keywords aren’t indexed by Google because people inflate them, branding techniques starting with the domain name, content needing to be above the fold, page ranks, 301 redirects, and much more.
Optimize every bit of your site serving and web pages with Page Speed – In this session, I learned about a new project called Page Speed. It’s an open-source Firefox/Firebug Add-on. Developers can use Page Speed to evaluate the performance of their web pages and to get suggestions on how to improve them. Showslow.com is a demo website that shows the speed of websites. For more information, see Page Speed.
HTML 5 Status Update – In this session, the Chrome team went over new features in HTML 5 we should keep an eye out for. Their demo of the new Gmail was fun and quite intuitive. Drag and drop attachments as if it was a desktop app. New areas in HTML 5 include Offline storage, Media, Networking, CSS3, and Platform Integration (drag and drop, notifications, geolocation).

The Guild Apps Comes to iPhone and iPad
Guildies from all around the world can now rejoice! New iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad apps of “The Guild” comics based on the web series created by Felicia Day just hit the iTunes app store!
If you’re unfamiliar with The Guild, it’s about a group of online gamers who eventually meet in real life. “The Knights of Good”, as they called themselves, found that although meeting in real life was awkward, it proved they were a strong team in game.
Codex, the main character of the story, is played by Felicia Day. She finds herself trapped in a life where each day consists of gaming and talking to her webcam.
The comics are the prequel to the forming of “The Knights of Good” and are outrageously hilarious. All hints and pieces of Codex’ history mentioned in the web series have been put into play in the comics.
The combination of Jim Rugg’s artistic work and Felicia Day’s sense of humor and storytelling makes the storyboards come to life. The Guild Comic #1 and Comic #2 are available and ready to be loaded onto your devices. With over 100 pages per digital comic book and beautiful storyboards, they’re a great deal for any Guildie.
If you’re new to comic books, you may be interested in seeing the making of The Guild Comic #1 in various stages at Dark Horse Comics. See the magical moment of when the comic came to life!
Although the apps are optimized for the iPhone and iPod Touch, the comic books look great on the iPad in 2x mode as well. You can be purchase the apps in the iTunes app store for 99 cents each. Comic #3 will be available in about a month, so stay tuned.
If you want to read more about the Guild, check out my interview with Felicia Day for Beatweek Magazine!

iPad Case Review: Macally Snap-On Cases
May 25, 2010 by daynah
Filed under Gadgets and Accessories, iPad, Reviews

If want a durable and lightweight case for your iPad, Macally may have what you’re looking for. Macally’s Metrobpad (Black Protective Snap-on Cover) and Metrocpad (Clear Protective Snap-on Cover) are cases that easily snap onto the iPad and protect the backing and four corners of it.
Metrobpad (Black Protective Snap-on Cover)
The difference with this case is the non-slip coating that helps you hold the iPad more securely. The surface of this case is very nice to the touch and is coated both on the interior and exterior of the case. The only downside is that you may find fingerprints on it if you tend to have oily fingers. However, this can be cleaned off easily with a hand wipe.
Metrocpad (Clear Protective Snap-on Cover)
This case is absolutely clear, making it almost invisible. Your iPad would look close to what it looked like when you unboxed it. Your beautiful Apple logo will display right through the case.
There are four small nubs on both of these cases, so when you put it flat on the table, only the nubs are touching it. Also, all of your connections and controls are open, so there’s no need to remove the case when charging, changing the volume, or plugging in the headset.
These cases are slim enough to fit in most loose fitting iPad sleeves. I highly suggest purchasing a sleeve for your iPad since the front side is not protected. These cases may be thin, but they’re not thin enough for the Apple iPad keyboard dock. You will need to remove it when docking it on the stand.
Luckily, removing the case off the iPad is an easy task. Simple push down on the two corners of one side and the case comes off.
Overall, these cases are perfect if you’re looking for a thin light hardshell iPad case. You can purchase the Metrobpad and Metrocpad at Macally.com for $29.99 each.
Disclosure: This product was sent by Macally for review purposes. This is part of Beatweek Magazine’s coverage of iPad products. Opinions expressed in this article are my own.

iPhone + iPad App Review: Glee
Smule has done it again with another hit musical app! They teamed up with Fox and made the lovely Glee app — a must-have app for every Gleek! Get your Gleek on and have fun singing with your favorite Glee cast members and friends!
Glee is a universal app (works with iPod Touches, iPhones, and iPads) that allows you to sing your favorite Glee songs with real-time harmonies and pitch correction. The four main features of the app are: Listen, Join, Sing, and Share.
Listen. As your fellow gleeks broadcast their songs, you’re able to listen to the amazing talents around the world. This is a signature feature in most Smule apps.
Join. Want to do a duet with a friend? “Join” in on a song you hear and add your voice to it! You can also create a club by adding Smule friends as singers to your songs or by joining a song on the Glee Globe.
There’s also song requests from the Gleeks inviting you to sing with them! You can sing with Rachel Berry or Finn Hudson. They’ll sing one part, and you’ll sing the other. When the song is done, it’ll be uploaded automatically to the server.
Sing. The main part of the app is definitely singing! Three songs are available when your purchase the app: Rehab, Keep Me Hanging On, and Somebody to Love. New songs are added every week and costs $0.99 each. To purchase a new song, simply click on it and confirm. The song and lyrics will download afterward.
Sing loudly and clearly into the mic of your device. If you are using an iPad, the mic is located on the top, next to the headphone jack. I recommend using your iPhone headset since the mic would be closer to your mouth and the background noise will be canceled out.
Simply pick a song and hit “start” for the recording to begin. While recording, you have the option to toggle on/off the pitch correction and the harmonies. Make your selections and sing your heart out! You can save or discard the recording at anytime. If you finish the whole song, it will automatically save into your library.
In the latest version of the app, you can also sing songs from your iTunes library. Select a song from your collection and start recording. For the best experience, I suggest selecting a karaoke version of the song or one you can sing a duet with. Keep in mind, iTunes song will not be broadcast or shared due to licensing restrictions.
Share. When you’re done recording, your files are saved in the “Share” box. There are three options on how you can share your song — share, broadcast, and add singers. No matter which option you pick, they all will upload your song to the server, so you’ll need to be connected to the internet.
- Share will allow you to email, Facebook, Twitter, or MySpace your link.
- Broadcast will upload it to the server and add you to the musical globe.
- Add singers will share your song with another Smule member so they can add their voice to it.
Here are some tips on how to make the Glee app experience more enjoyable:
Before you start using the app, turn off all notifications on your device. That way, you won’t get interrupted while recording a song.
Also, if you’re using pitch correction, be sure to sing on the same note. If you vary from high to low notes, it may sound a bit strange when the app tries to correct it. You may want to practice with pitch on and off to see which sounds better.
Lastly, when you’re listening to others sing, keep in mind some songs will sound better than others. I suggest selecting “Top Performances” from the top menu to hear the cream of the crop. These performances usually have a lot of Gleek followers.
This app is designed to be played in portrait mode on either the iPhone or iPad. It’s nicely designed and every page in the app displays a colorful photo of your favorite glee character. Overall, the app is worth the 99 cents, but believe me, if you’re a true Gleek, you’ll find yourself spending a lot more on in-app purchases! New songs are added every week so check back frequently.
The Glee app is currently on sale today for just 99 cents (originally $2.99). You can purchase it in the iTunes app store.
For more information, see their official website.
Video Demo
Just watch Nick, a Smule employee, demonstrate the app. It’s just all in a night’s work at the Smule headquarters!

iPad Keyboard Dock Review
May 11, 2010 by daynah
Filed under Gadgets and Accessories, iPad, Reviews
The iPad Keyboard Dock is definitely a peripheral made just for the iPad. It’s looks like a basic Mac keyboard, but with an iPad dock attached on the top side. Simply slide your iPad onto the dock. Once it’s in position, just type away. The keyboard dock holds the iPad in an upright eye-level position. On the back of the dock is a place for the charger to connect as well as a “line out” for speakers.
The keyboard itself has some nice built-in iPad features. The top row of keys takes you to the following screens or functions: Home, Search, Brightness low, Brightness high, Slideshow/lock, Bring up keyboard, enter passcode, iPod controls, volume, and iPad lock. This is quite handy when you need to make quick adjustments.
It’s a full-sized keyboard with a very clean and sleek design. There’s a slight tilt at the bottom of the keyboard so your hands are not laying flat on the table when typing. The keyboard dock has a straight design and layout, so I don’t recommend using this keyboard for long hours of typing. But since you’ll be using this with just the iPad, you probably won’t be using it for long periods of time anyways.
Also, because the iPad is docked directly on the keyboard, this setup is best used on a table or desk, as opposed to in your lap. This keyboard is also not the easiest to pack or lug around at a conference due to the dock part. It’s probably best used in the home instead.
This keyboard dock is best paired with Speck’s unique CandyShell case. There’s a small flap at the bottom for the keyboard dock to be put in.
You can purchase the iPad Keyboard dock for $69.00 from Apple.com or your nearest Apple Store retailer.

iPad Case Review: Speck CandyShell
May 10, 2010 by daynah
Filed under Gadgets and Accessories, iPad, Reviews
Speck Candyshell cases are back, and they’re bigger and better than ever! It’s no surprise that an iPad line for the Candyshells has been made. The iPhone version won Beatweek Magazine’s Best Rubber iPhone Case of 2009 Award! A bigger version of the case does require more care and Speck has handled that quite nicely. Not only that, they did it with a bit of style!
The interior is made of a soft rubberized material that absorbs any impact the iPad may encounter. The unique part about this case is the opening in the lower back. This allows you to dock the iPad on the keyboard without removing the case. It’s also handy when you need to charge the iPad too. Simply lift the cut-out piece to charge or dock your iPad. It snaps on and off of the iPad easily and kind of reminds me of a doggy door!
The edges of the case completely covers the iPad to prevent any scratches and bumps on the sides. There are also cutouts for the headset, screen lock, and holes for the speakers. However, the on/off button and volume controls are covered with a rubberized material. This also means that you may have to press them slightly harder than usual.
Overall, it’s a very unique design that’s both protective and stylish. The case covers the iPad seamlessly and is currently available in two colors — BatWing Black and NightShade Purple. You can purchase the Speck CandyShell for iPad for $49.95. For more information, see SpeckProducts.com

How to Add a Camera to Your iPad

Disappointed that the iPad didn’t come with a camera? Well, so was I. But that doesn’t mean you can’t snap live photos on your iPad! All you need is an iPad, iPhone, and two apps.
Here are a few steps to get your iPad camera up and running!
- On the iPad, download and install the “Camera-A” app. (99 cents)
- On the iPhone, download and install the “Camera-B” app. It’s available for free.
- Once you have them installed, turn bluetooth on both devices. (Do this by going into Settings-> General-> Bluetooth -> On)
- Instead of Step 3, you can connect to the same wifi network also. (Do this by going into Settings -> Wi-Fi -> On -> Choose a network.)
- Now launch Camera-A and Camera-B on the iPad and iPhone, respectively.
- Camera-A on the iPad will show you whatever image Camera-B on the iPhone is pointing at.
- When you’re happy with an image, click on the shutter button in the middle on the iPad and that image will be saved to both devices.
Camera-A and Camera-B are two very simple to use apps. The hardest part is remembering to turn on the bluetooth! Camera-A on the iPad also have options to zoom in on an object as well as a toggle to turn off saving to the iPhone.
Since the camera is on the iPhone, it’s much easier to maneuver it to point to the subject you want. Also keep in mind, the image will only be as good as the iPhone camera, so it may appear noisy on the iPad due to the higher resolution. There is also no auto-focus in the Camera-B (iPhone) app, so you can’t tap and focus on an area like with the default camera app.
Overall, if you want to quickly capture live photos onto your iPad, these two apps are great for that. They can’t be more simple! Camera-A and Camera-B are both available in the iTunes App store.
