Happy Halloween to all you geeks, ghouls, and goblins! Here are special Halloween apps for you to be bobbin’! Pleasant dreams and have a safe night. But be careful out there and don’t let the vampires bite!

If you’re looking for more games to sink your teeth in, check out my hot list of Game Center-enabled apps!

Plants vs Zombies – You have to know what game this is! It’s only one of the most popular game to ever exist! The title of the game sounds scary, but it’s totally adorable and addictive — what a combo! Protect your house by planting various protective plants in front of it. Zombies charge across the lawn, hoping to get a meal or two — your brains! Some flowers create sunshine, while others just kill the zombies. Set your plants out strategically to slow down the zombies while collecting coins to purchase more plants! Both iPhone and iPad versions are on sale, up to 66% off this weekend. iPhone/iPod Touch Version (99 cents) | iPad Version ($4.99)

Alice in Wonderland – if you’re an Alice fan, this is a must. This adventure puzzle game was inspired by Tim Burton’s film. Help Alice get through various mazes, finding all of her looking-glass friends. Collect shards of mirror pieces and help her get back home. Normally $4.99, it’s only 99 cent this weekend.
iPhone/iPod Touch Version (99 cents) | iPhone/iPod Touch Lite Version (Free)

Zombie Pizza – Zombies love to eat brains.. and pizza! Who knew? Zombie Pizza is a light-hearted horror puzzle game that is such a treat for this Halloween!
It combines my two favorite types of games into one — puzzle and time management game. It gets your brains racking.. and on pizzas! Add hearts, brains, and other disgusting body parts onto pizzas to feed zombies before they eat you!
iPhone/iPod Touch Version ($1.99) | iPhone/iPod Touch Lite Version (Free)

Angry Birds Halloween – Just in time for Halloween! The new Angry Birds hits the app store and is well received! ‘Tis the season to be squishing pigs! 45 new spooktacular levels for you to play, filled with floating lanterns, pumpkins, and many more obstacles! Crazy Pumpkin – This popular app is back again and better than before! It’s your very own digital Jack-o-Latern! Swipe his eyes, nose, and mouth to create your very own unique Jack-o-Latern! Shake your device to change the light’s colors and play a random creepy sound. Definitely fun at Halloween parties, or while trick-or-treating! Full version is free this weekend. I included the lite version in case the price goes up.
iPhone/iPod Touch Version (Free) | iPhone/iPod Touch Lite Version (Free)

Spooky Spirits: Puzzle Drop is a match-three type of puzzle game where you drop colored droplets to match with the fallen pieces. The twist is that you can only drop two colors at a time. it up to switch the colors, down to drop, left or right to move in those directions. How To Add QR Codes To III Library Catalogs

October 25, 2010 by

Adding QR Codes to your Innovative Interfaces Library Catalog is pretty easy! Just follow the steps below. Note, you should be familiar with your III HTML files before attempting to make these changes. If not, contact your Systems Admin. I also recommend testing on your test-webport first.

  1. Backup two files in your /screens directory — wwwoptions and bib_display.html, then download to your computer (via FTP)
  2. In wwwoptions, look for ICON_RECORDLINK and change it to:

    ICON_RECORDLINK=http://YOUR_LIBRARY_WEBSITE/%s

where YOUR_LIBRARY_WEBSITE is the URL of your Library Catalog. %s will dynamically display the unique record id.

  3. In bib_display.html, add in:

    <img src="http://chart.apis.google.com/chart?cht=qr&chs=120x120&chl=
    <!--{recordlink}-->
    " />

to where you want the QR code displayed. Be sure to put the recordlink token on it’s own separate line and aligned to the left.

  4. Upload both files back into your /screens folder and reboot the webports.
  5. Do a keyword search in your Library Catalog and find a record. You should see your QR code somewhere on the record display. (See image below)
  6. Take your mobile device and scan the QR code (using a barcode app). It should take you directly to the page with the catalog. This makes it easier for patrons to search for something on a desktop computer, scan it, and capture that data on their mobile devices to take to a librarian.

Recommended QR Scanner Apps

If you need a QR scanner for your mobile device, here are some I recommend. Download the appropriate one.

For further reading and more advanced QR techniques, read about it on Google Code.

October 25, 2010 by

Here’s a list of this week’s hottest bargain apps! My favorites this week are definitely Angry Birds Halloween and Plock! Find me on Game Center — ‘daynah’ Enjoy! ;)

Angry Birds Halloween – Just in time for Halloween! iPhone/iPod Touch Version (99 cents) | iPad Version ($1.99)

Plock – Although I haven’t played this popular game on Facebook, I think it’s a lot more fun on the iPhone or iPod Touch. The screen is filled with colorful square blocks that you must clear. Tap on matching colored blocks (of two or more) to clear them to earn points. Classic modes allows you one minute to break as many as possible. Survival mode allows you to play as long as you can! When no more matches are possible, shake your device to mix up the blocks! Leaderboards on both OpenFeint and Apple’s Game Center. iPhone Version (99 cents)

Build your planet while taking care or terrorizing your followers with your godly wonders. iPhone Version (Free) | iPad Version (Free)

Toy Story 3 Memory Match is a very basic match-3 card game. Flip over cards one at a time to find matches of Toy Story 3 characters. Race against the clock! Do well and earn various Toy Story 3 wallpapers for your iPhone. The app is sponsored by Toys R Us. Again, it’s very basic, but if you enjoy simple games or Disney apps, this one is for you. iPhone Version (Free)

Restaurant Story – think you got what it takes to run a restaurant? Why not open a virtual one? Design your new business and cook plenty of food for your customers! Customize and choose your menu. Items that take long to cook will of course make you more money. Earn money to build an even bigger restaurant and expand your menu choices. Universal App (Free)

Ponk – If you love match 3 games, you have to try this one. Bubbles fall from the top and you must match the colored bubbles together by dragging them. The more you match, the more points earned. Some falling bubbles include ones you can’t move, and ones that can eliminate any colored bubbles it touches. iPhone Version (99 cents)

Little Things – is a fun seek and find game. You literally find little things within little things. All graphics are made up of smaller graphics of particular colors. Search for 5 given items to be awards points. The faster your find the items, the more you earn! A new lite version is also available for your to try before buying. How Well Are You Sleeping? Find out with Zeo!

October 5, 2010 by
Filed under Gadgets and Accessories, Reviews

Do you have trouble sleeping at night? Or are you curious about your sleeping habits? Now you can find out just how well you’re sleeping. Meet the Zeo, your very own personal sleeping coach!

Monitoring your sleeping habits has never been so easy. Simply put the Zeo headband on right before bedtime. The Zeo headband will magically record your sleeping habits and send it wirelessly to the Zeo device. When you wake up, put the headband back on the device to charge, and check out your ZQ score.

What is ZQ?
In a single number, ZQ objectively measures the quality and quantity of your sleep by calculating the total amount of time you slept (Total Z) and adding and subtracting points based on the amount of restorative sleep (Deep and REM) and disruptive sleep (time and duration spent awake) that you get throughout the night. The result is a simple, unique way to both measure and understand your sleep.
-Zeo

While testing out the product, I found that it takes a bit of getting use to at first. The headband may slip, move, and even fall off while you sleep at night. If you have long hair, the best way to wear it is over the forehead and under the hair. That seems to keep it in place through the night. Put the headband over the hair tends to make it slip. When the headband does fall off, the Sleep Score show up as “inefficient data” and the score for that night will not be added to your average ZQ score.

When you sleep, the headband will collect the electrical signals naturally produced by the brain and transmit it to the device. When you wake up, simply put the headband back on the magnetic top of the device, and began to analyze your sleep. You can see how long and how well you slept last night, in addition to how many times you woke up, if you were in deep sleep or not, and your ZQ score. Tab through your sleep graph for to see exactly what times you were in deep sleep, REM, and when you woke up!

Your sleeping data is saved locally onto a SD card. For further analysis of your sleeping habits, take the sd card and upload the data online onto Mysleep.myzeo.com (via your computer). On the website, can see graphs of your average sleep time, and your personal coach can help you analyze the data. The graphs look amazing on the website, breaking down your data into various easy-to-understand charts.

If you have an iPhone, there’s an added bonus. The new myZeo (Sleep Viewer) iPhone app allows you can take your sleep analysis tool on the go. I found that I use the app more often since its easier to analyze my sleep when I have a free minute or two. Before you use the iPhone app, be sure to sign up for an account on the Mysleep.myzeo.com first and upload your Zeo data. Log into the iPhone app and you’re first greeted with bar graphs displaying data from your last 7 nights. You can quickly view your ZQ score for the entire week. For further analysis, click on “Nightly Data” to see exactly what type of sleep and how well you slept for that night. Swipe left and right to cycle through each day. Rotate the screen to take a closer look of the nightly graph (same graph you’ll find on your device and the website). This graph will display exactly when you fell asleep, when you were awake, and when you had light and deep sleep. The user interface of the iPhone app was very easy to read, and the data display looks gorgeous. Graphs are highlighted in various colors, making the data very easy to understand.

As you update your data onto the website, your myZeo Sleeping Coach will analyze this data and email you a sleep fitness assessment. These emails are personalized with helpful hints on what you can improve your ZQ score.

Overall, I think the Zeo is quite an amazing product. Never have we been able to visualize how well we’re sleeping until now. If you’re interested in knowing more about yourself and your sleeping habits, I highly recommend this product. The only downfall is the high price, but I feel it’s worth it in the long run. The more you know, the better you’ll sleep.

You can purchase the Zeo online for $199. It comes with the display device, a headband, a SD card and USB reader, a SmartWake alarm option, and access to all of the online analysis tools. Additional access to the Guided Coach options are $7.95 a month or $79.95 a year. If you prefer to pay up front $299 for the device, you also get a lifetime of Guided Coaching. For more information, see myZeo.com.

Disclosure: This product was sent by Zeo for review purposes. his is part of Beatweek Magazine’s coverage of iPhone products. Opinions expressed in this article are my own.

Review: STM iPad Org Board

October 3, 2010 by
Filed under Gadgets and Accessories, iPad, Reviews

Need a way to organize your iPad and its accessories? Meet the new STM iPad Org Board — it’s a minimalist’s design for taking your necessities on the go.

The iPad Org Board was designed with an on-to-go person in mind. Both sides of the board are made to be functional. One side of the board is made of neoprene, aimed to hold and protect the iPad. The other side is made of a micro ripstop backing along with a strip of stretchy fabric runs across it to create four slots for your accessories.

The neoprene side has a pocket that your iPad can slide right into. On top is a flap closure that encloses your iPad entirely in the sleeve. In the middle is a backing made of a sturdy board to give the Org Board its shape. I recommend sliding your iPad in face down so it’s flat on this surface.

On the flip side is a 300D micro ripstop that has 4 slots for your accessories. There are two large slots and two smaller ones. The large slots fit items like an iPhone or an iPod Touch. Ideally, you may want to put your iPhone or iPod Touch in one and wrap your charging cable in the other slot. In the center are two smaller slots, perfect for a pen, stylus, and/or headsets.

One thing to keep in mind is that the neoprene is form-fitted for the iPad, so it’ll work best if the iPad does not have a case on (unless it’s super slim). On the organizational side, I recommend sliding your iPod Touch or iPhone into the slot without a case, or with a very slim case on. A thick case may stretch the slot, or make it difficult to take out.

The ideal use for this iPad Org Board is if you want to carry your iPad to a short distance, perhaps to a meeting. You can carry it on your arm like a folder and still have all your accessories when you reach your destination. It’s also ideal to pack your iPad Org Board into another bag to make it easier to take your necessities with you anywhere.

Overall, the STM iPad Org Board is thin, minimal, and very lightweight to carry your iPad in. It’s certainly one of the more unique iPad accessories that makes a great organizational tool that’s perfect for carrying alone or putting it in another bag. It could be purchased at STMbags.com for $24.95.
