App Review: Draw Something for iPhone and iPad

One of the hottest social games right now has got to be Draw Something by OMGPOP. Anyone can play; whether you’re an artist or not, it’s fun, addictive, and quite easy!

What is Draw Something? As the name suggests, it’s a Pictionary-type game where you draw and try to guess your friend’s word. You and your friend are on the same team. Drawing and guessing a word correctly rewards both sides.

To start, search for your friend in the game. They can be found either by username or Facebook. Then you’ll be given a list of three words, each one having a different value. The easiest word is worth one coin. The next challenging word is worth two coins. And the most difficult-to-draw word is worth three coins. Select one of the words and draw it on the next screen.

Once you’re done drawing, submit and send it to your friend. A video recording of you drawing your masterpiece unfolds for your friend to watch. Below the screen are twelve letters. Some of these letters are in the word, and some are not. Once they figure out what the word is, they can start tapping on the letters to fill in the blanks. If they guess correctly, it’s their turn to draw something for you. When it’s your turn again, you will see a video of your drawing along with your friend’s guesses. And then you get to guess their drawing.

So what can you do with all these coins you collect? You can purchase more paint colors! The five default colors are nice, but having many shades of various colors to pick from is fun too.

So what happens if you’re stuck? If you can’t figure out what your friend drew, you can use the bomb and blast away some of the given letters that aren’t in the word. Only one blast per round is allowed. If you still can’t figure it out, you can just pass.

I think the drawing videos being played back to the users is what makes this game stand apart from other drawing games. It’s fun watching how the brain works, from drawing the first stroke, to the exact moment when the user figures out the word.

I highly recommend trying this game if you haven’t already. The game is on sale at an introductory price of 99 cents and comes with 400 coins and extra bombs. If you are unsure about the purchase, try the ad version for free.

Google+ – is the shiny new social network by Google. It’s fun and addictive once you have all all your friends join. You can leave comments and +1 (saying you ‘liked’ something) on your friends’ updates. There’s also a feature called Huddle, which is like group texting, for specific Circles or groups of people. You also get notified of various updates on your Google+ profile. Definitely worth the download if you use Google+ a lot.

BabyCenter Birth Class – if you’re pregnant, or planning to have a family soon, this is a wonderful app to have on your iPad. It takes you through 3 hours of a birth class, explaining signs of labor, as well as various stages of labor. There’s also great tips and guidance from doctors, midwives, and birth educators, and much, much more. This app use to be $40, but was recently reduced to being free. iPad Version (Free)

Photovine – Created by Google, this is my new favorite photography social network! Start off with a picture (a seed) and watch it grow! Basically, you upload a photo and categorize it. Watch your ‘vine’ grow as more people add photos to your category. You can add photos to ther people’s categories as well. It’s an interesting and new way of displaying your photos. Plus, I’m sure you have lots of unsorted photos on your phone that you can definitely categorize and have fun with this app! iPhone App / iPod Touch 3rd gen (Free)

Google Catalogs – Get ready to do some windowshopping! Recently released by Google, this app lets you flip through many rich and beautiful catalogs. Watch videos and save your favorite products (requires Google account) in a scrapbook. You can even create photo collages of your favorite items and share them. Word Lens – This is probably one of the most amazing apps I’ve seen in a while. It instantly translate printed text from one language into another using your phone’s built-in camera. And the magical part is that it does it in real time! Point your phone at a sign and it’ll translate the text instantly! It’s a free app with two demo modes on it. Snow Brawlin’ – Risoo the squirrel needs your help! A group of rogue rodents have taken over his area. And with the season’s nut shortage, there’s only one way to settle this. Snowball fight! It’s a fun game that will get your quick fingers tapping and heart laughing. The game is free but you can purchase in-app extra three lives for 99 cents. It is ad-supported so that could be a little bit annoying. Some ads show up right over your buttons, and when a game is over, a big ad is shown too. But it may be worth the download if you enjoy word games.

Star Wars Arcade Falcon Gunner – Probably one of the coolest Augmented Reality games currently available! Imagine defending your own city against galactic intruders right in your own living room! Tetris – Who doesn’t know how to play Tetris? It’s a classic! Geometric pieces drop down and you need to rotate and move them to fit in rows below. Color Stream – If you’re a designer, you may be interested in this app. It’s a nifty color palette tool. You can take photos in the app and it’ll pick out 5 colors from the photo for you and give its hex numbers. Very simple to use and no need to pull out Photoshop to take a screenshot. The Crystals of Atlantis Deluxe – It’s very similar to other match-3 games that you played before. Goal is to make crystal matches so your historical artifact pieces fall down to the lower level. Before the app, you would need to email your photo and it’ll appear on the website. Now with the app, simply select and upload. Discover — Wikipedia in a Magazine is a great app for browsing Wikipedia. Discover new and fun information everyday in a beautiful interface. Data is pulled from the Wikipedia website but is displayed in a fun interactive magazine. View in portrait-mode for a magazine-like experience, and landscape-mode for a more book-like experience. The app requires a data connection to work and saves your search and viewing history so you can get back to older articles. City Story is a cute new game where you build your own city, adding shops, houses, parks, factories, and more! Make money by producing goods from the factories. Share you city with your friends by creating a free Storm8 account. It’s similar to games like We Rule and Sim City. The game is free and universal. The one thing I find lacking in this app is the social part. There’s a login system called Storm 8, and you can invite your friends on Facebook, but it’s not enough to tap into all the friends I have on other gaming systems. Universal (Free)

This is not a new game, but lately, my friends got me addicted to Words with Friends. It’s a word game that’s very similar to Scrabble. Each player is given a tray of letters, and the object is to put them on the board to make words out of them. Various points are given out depending on how many letters were use, how much each letter is worth, and/or where it was placed on the board. It’s a fun casual game played at both the players’ pace. Free version has ads after you submit a word, but you can purchase the full version for $2.99. My gamer name is ‘daynah’ if you want to play!

Here’s a very cute badminton game for the iPhone and iPod touch. The animal characters play against each other on a volleyball court. In this version, your character is an adorable pig that can blow the birdie over the net. You can blow into the iPhone mic or tap the birdie to move it. Tile your phone left and right to move your character. I think the game is cute and fun, but the controls are not the best.

Mashable.com is an excellent site for all your social media, technology, and entertainment news. If you enjoy the site, the app is a must! Be notified the moment a new article is on a website. The interface is very easy to navigate and makes reading the articles enjoyable. Instapaper is integrated in the app so you can view articles at a later time.

The official Digg app was released this week which makes visiting your favorite news site much easier on the go! View by your favorite topics, easily digg, bury, and share news articles, as well as save your favorites for later reading.

If you enjoy time management games, then you’ll love Diner Dash. Help Flo run a restaurant by seating, serving, and clearing the dishes at each table. Try out the lite version for free, but act fast. Take advantage of the 80% off sale of the full version!

Dr. Horrible | Download for 99 cents
Any fan of Dr. Horrible will enjoy this app! Dark Horse Comics present Dr. Horrible as a comic. The story takes place with Billy being an 9-Year-Old boy, and you get to see how his criminal master-mind life got started. The story is brilliant, and the app is elegantly done. Flip pages just by tapping. Tap on settings for options to go back to a specific page or change the transition type. Very simple, and quite enjoyable. And if you don’t know who Dr. Horrible is, please go watch Dr. Horrible’s Sing-along-Blog! The 3-part webisode is free to watch online. :) This comic is a prequel to the webisode.
