No Network? Nooooooo…

Have you ever imagine what life would be without a computer, especially in today’s world? No networking, no surfing, no emailing, no ftping, and no chatting. To add to that list, there may be no working also.
Today around 10am, I noticed my network icon in the toolbar get disconnected. Within the next 10 seconds, everyone in the office jumped up from their seat and asked, “Is there something wrong with the network?” That was followed by an “uh oh…” And then the phone calls started flooding into our office.
At first we thought it was just our routers and servers down. So the guys went to check on that while my co-worker and I called all the departments as well as answered the phones. And then later we were notified that half of the campus was down, so it wasn’t just our building. There had been a lot of construction on campus and we believe some of the fibers and cables have been cut. Ack!
Now, our building as well as others on campus are internet-less. We were able to get our local network to work but as for anything else, we’ll have to wait for campus to report back. If in fact the cables were cut, we may not be entirely back up for days… if not weeks. And my coworker joked, “we may be networked to my 56k Pacbell account in the next few days!” Wonderful… 400 computers sharing a 56k dial up!
